Clara, a civilian moral-support volunteer with some catechetical training, arrives in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, where she comforts exhausted soldiers, reads prayers, and helps them maintain their courage. After struggling to support so many men on her own, she receives unexpected encouragement from General Whitaker and General Evelyn Carter, who promise her recognition and additional support. Despite her exhaustion and the hardships around her, Clara decides to remain with the soldiers and continue helping them for as long as she is needed.
